Who we are
The /dev/null Foundation is a group of friends who want to make the Internet more accessible to everyone who has a message to convey. We are members of the first generation to grow up with the Internet, and the last generation to remember a time before instant worldwide communication was trivial. We want to help people take advantage of that connectivity to further togetherness and freedom of expression, to provide educational resources to help them make the most of that connectivity, and to help secure the future of tools that keep connected resources like the Internet accessible to everyone on their own terms.

What we do
Our major project is 4d2 dot org, a hosting platform where deserving individuals and groups are given a voice online, free of charge. We provide web hosting with a broader range of available tools than most commercial providers. We provide each user with full access to a Linux/UNIX account, giving them an opportunity to learn valuable skills. We also maintain online services that have fallen out of popularity, like Gopher, Telnet, and real email over SMTP/IMAP. These services may not have the glitz and glamour of Web 2.0, but they are readily accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities, and they give people a choice in how to access them through the wide variety of clients that exist. We also believe they are educationally important because they form the historical backbone of the Internet.

How we do it
Today, we operate on an extremely limited budget. Our founders are our directors, they draw no salary, and we have organized our foundation to ensure that our directors will always be unpaid volunteers. We have no employees and perform all administrative work ourselves.

How you can help
Our most important resource is the time of our volunteers, and it's also the best donation you can make to our cause. If you'd like to help out, please contact us at the email addresses you'll find further down this page.

We spend about $1,000 each year on the infrastructure and connectivity that make our projects possible, and we are also happy to accept monetary donations that help us offset that cost and continue to grow. We are a recognized 501(c)(3) public charity, and contributions by U.S. residents are tax-deductible. We will provide all donors with a tax receipt. You can donate to us by sending funds to the address further down this page, or by clicking the PayPal donate button below.

As a very small nonprofit, we are not required to file many of the financial disclosures that are commonly made public by larger charities. However, we are committed to transparency, and we extend this to our own operations. We will soon be updating this site with information about our income and expenses. In the meantime, if you have any questions about our operations or where we spend our money, please send us an email and we will do our best to address your concerns.
